Served and suffered during The Great War, resting at Sandgate Cemetery, not forgotten.
50 years ago today, on the 10th June 1972, Lance Corporal William Reuben Baker, 45th Battalion (Reg No-4731), labourer from Tattersalls Hotel, Bowling Alley Point, via Tamworth, New South Wales, was laid to rest at Sandgate Cemetery, age 77. ANGLICAN 3-219. 27.
Born at Armidale, New South Wales on the 10th June 1894 to James and Kathleen Agnes Baker; husband of Charlotte May Baker nee Fouracre (married 1919, Nundle, N.S.W., died 1967, sleeping here), William enlisted November 1915 with the 4th Battalion at Liverpool, N.S.W.
Admitted to hospital 22.2.1917 (trench feet, mild).
Wounded in action - 8.8.1918 (GSW right leg, mild).
Invalided to England 13.8.1918.
William returned home invalided on the 11th February 1919, being discharged medically unfit on the 14th April 1919.
Mr. Baker’s name has been inscribed on the Bowling Alley Point Great War Roll of Honour (photo).
I have placed poppies and a 1914-1918 WAR label in remembrance of William’s service and sacrifice for King & Country.
Older brother Charles Albert (3rd Australian Field Artillery Brigade, Reg No-4336, born 1887, Bundarra N.S.W., died 10.4.1920, Rookwood Necropolis, N.S.W., (Church of England Section, Row H Grave 142), also served 1st A.I.F.
