Charles John Buckley's Biography
Before Enlistment (1891)
Charles John Buckley was born in Sydney, New South Wales in 1891. His parents were Bridget Buckley and Daniel Buckley. Bridget Buckley was named Bridget Mahoney until she later married Daniel Buckley, changing her name to Bridget Buckley. Bridget Mahoney and Daniel Buckley were married in Michigan State in the United States of America. They migrated to Australia and had their son, Charles Buckley. Charles John Buckley had five siblings.
Their family was Roman Catholic and Charles worked as a Lather. He lived on Glenmore Street in New South Wales.
Enlistment (1916)
On the 22nd of May, 1916, Charles John Buckley enlisted himself into the world war to fight for Australia.
Embarkation (1916)
He embarked on the 25th of October, 1916 on the HMAT A11 Ascanius Private. The Ascanius was a ship made for war. It carried 1728 soldiers, 10 horses and 65 officers. The ship embarked with another ship called Medic which carried 28 officers, 270 horses and 977 men. The two ships were at the harbour of Albany for a long time, so much so that some of the sailors that were set to take the men to their destination jumped out of the boat and swam to shore, which only delayed the embarkation.
The two ships eventually emabrked, leaving Australia on the 25th of October, 1916.
During the war (1916-1918)
The Ascianus made a brief stop at Albany, New South Wales, then travelled to Egypt. Buckley and his fellow soldiers trained in Cairo for three months and stayed there until there mission awaited them.
Returning home (1918)
Charles John Buckley returned from the war after it ended. He returned home with little injury.
After the war (1919-1933)
Charles John Buckley returned to his job that he had before he enlisted in 1916 as a Lather in New South Wales. He saved up enough money to travel the world. During his journey around the world, he got severly sick and later died of inflamation of the lungs. He died in Norieul, France in 1933.
