Eric was the fifth of six children of Alfred Bennett (b1864 in Gundagai, NSW) and Selina Butler (b1871 in Brisbane, QLD). Alfred and Selina married in 1892 in Brisbane, QLD. In the early 1900s the family moved to Charter's Towers and then Gympie where Alfred was a  Life Assurance Superintendant. In the 1930s Alfred and Selina moved to Sydney NSW.

Eric worked as a Clerk in Brisbane before moving to Sydney with his parents. In 1939 Eric married Mavis Lilian Knox (b1916 in Sydney NSW), and enlisted in the Australian Army. Eric was a Sergeant (Service No:NX1110) attached to 9 Corps of Signals when he was Discharged in September 1946. Brother Alfred (Able Seaman; Service No:3179/Private; Service No:N318772) served WWI and WWII.

Eric and Mavis Divorced in 1943 and Mavis remarried. Eric worked briefly as a Linesman in Sydney before passing the Public Service Exams in 1948. He was working as a Clerk in Sydney in 1958 when he married Phoebe May Savage (nee Fuller; b1897 in Mitchell, QLD). Phoebe's son Leslie William George Savage (Able Seaman; Service No:23603) was KiA in the Meditteranean on board HMAS Parramatta in 1941.

Eric and Phoebe settled in Sydney where Eric was a Clerk. Eric died in 1985 and Phoebe in 1989.
