Born on 27th August, 1882 in Loganlea (QLD), Herbert had seen action in the Second Boer War in the 5th Queensland Imperial Bushman (SN 214). He returned unscathed on April 30th, 1902. He married Martha Margaretha Dreger in Yengarue in Queensland on the 12th July, 1911. He was 33 years and 11 months working as a Shoeing Smith when he enlisted on the 9th August, 1916 at Brisbane in Queensland. He listed that he had ‘12 months active service SOUTH AFRICA Light horse, time expired’ and ‘7 months active service REMOUNTS, Disbandoned[sic].’

He was assigned 11th Depot Battalion in August, but his embarkation date conflicts, his record says from Melbourne on the 15th December, 1916 but there is evidence to say he embarked as Camel Corps reinforcements on the 12th December, 1916 aboard HMAT Medic from Sydney. In the end though, he was marched to the 3rd Light Horse Training Regiment at Moascar on the 16th January, 1917, taken onto strength the following day. On the 3rd March, he was transferred to the 4th Light Horse Training Regiment only to be marched into the 3rd Light Horse Training Regiment on the same day, only to be transferred to the 4th Light Horse Machine Gun Squadron being taken onto strength on the 4th March. He was promoted to Shoeing Smith on the 17th March, went to hospital on the 11th May, and embarked aboard ‘Bella’ on the 5th February, 1919, arriving in Australia on the 7th March, being discharged on the 23rd April, 1919 at the 1st Military District.
