Ted was the second of six children of Lewis Henry Ballard (b1882 in Kiata, Victoria) and Annie (Dot) Irene Elsie Williams (b1887 in Boggaby, NSW). Lewis (a Labourer) and Dot married in 1904 in Yilminning nr Narrogin WA where they lived until the late 1920s when the family moved to Perth.
Ted worked as a Railway Porter for WAGR and enlisted initially in the ACMF (Private; Service No:W240217) with 44th Infantry Battalion before enlisting in the AIF (Private; Service No:WX12830). Ted served with 2/11 Infantry Battalion in the Middle East (9 September 1941 - 17 March 1942) and New Guinea (11 November 1944 - 30 November 1945). He was Discharged in December 1945.
Returning to Perth WA, Ted worked as a Porter with WAGR and in 1946 married Jessie Maud Cassidy (b1923 in Dwellingup, WA). The couple settled in Perth where Ted worked with WAGR as a Porter before becoming a Fitter's Assistant. Ted and Jessie retired to Northam WA, where Ted died in 2012 and Jessie in 2019.
