Biography

While on service in France , George was awarded the Military Medal. He, with three other Sappers repaired a damaged road which was was holding up the advancement of troops and supplies to the front lines.
While undertaking the repairs they came under heavy artillery fire with some twenty eight shells exploding within thirty yards of them.
George and his men remained there all day repairing the road as necessary, which allowed convoys to advance to the front unimpeded
