Johannes left Adelaide with his brother Gustav on the Ballarat on 12 August 1916 and arrived in Devonport on 30 September. He went to France from Folkestone with his unit on 30 December. Johannes was gassed and suffered shrapnel wounds in action on 2 June 1918 and was evacuated to Kitchener Military Hospital at Brighton, England for treatment the next day. He was able to leave hospital on 9 June and return to his unit. Johannes returned to Australia on the Wahehe on 31 March 1920 and
was discharged on 10 July.
