Son of Thomas and Elizabeth Louisa Barnes of Brisbane.
Brother of Louis Walter Barnes who was killed in action on 3 August 1916 while serving with the 25th Battalion and has no known grave. His name appears on the Villers-Bretonneux Memorial, Charles William Barnes of Elliott Street, Eagle Junction, Brisbane, QLD and Thomas Barnes of Dunwich, QLD.
