Son of Foster Nepean Varney and Ellen Jane Varney nee Campbell of Bairnsdale, Victoria. Foster briefly served in WW1 but was discharged after a couple of months as medically unfit.

Commenced return to Australia on 18 July 1919 aboard HT Takada disembarking on 7 September 1919

During 1925c Foster married Catherine Paula Bourke in Victoria
