Biography contributed by Adelaide Botanic High School
Christopher William Allmond was born in January 1893, in Cherryville, South Australia. He had a mother named Ann Elizabeth and father named Walter Henry Allmond. He was a gardener by occupation, and, as stated in his description upon enlistment, he had a fresh complexion, blue eyes, and dark brown hair. He was also not married, he was 5 feet 8 1/2 inches tall and weighing 148 lbs. At the age of 23, Allmond made the decision to enlist in the Australian Imperial Force.
With no previous military service on his record, Allmond enlisted in the Australian Imperial Force as trooper on the 25th of January 1916. His service number was 2568, and he joined the 9th Australian Light Horse Regiment. After enlisting, Allmond was sent to the base camp in Mitcham, Adelaide, where he served from the 4th of February 1916 to the 20th of June 1916. He was later transferred to the 3rd Light Horse Reserve Regiment on the 9th of August 1916. Shortly after on the 10th of August 1916 he reported for duty and was taken on strength to the 3rd Light Horse Regiment.
Allmond was deployed to Egypt. On August 10, 1916, he was attached to the 3rd Light Horse Regiment in Egypt. By September 9, 1916, he was detached to the Imperial Camel Corps at Moascar, Egypt, which was a critical transition in his military career. Less than a week later, on September 16, 1916, he was transferred to the Imperial Camel Corps at Abbassia, Egypt. Allmond's first major engagement occurred on October 31, 1916, when he joined the 1st Company of the Imperial Corps. Later that year, on November 25, 1916, he was taken on strength with the Australian Reserve Imperial Camel Corps at Serapium, Egypt. In 1917, Allmond was assigned to the 1st Anzac Battalion of the 1st Camel Brigade on January 25, 1917. Throughout this period, he served in various locations in Egypt and Palestine.
Christopher William Allmond was admitted to the hospital with malaria in May 1918. Allmond was transferred to Cairo to get more help after his malaria symptoms returned. He spent time moving between different hospitals and recovery camps, but his illness did not go away. Even though he got a little better for a short time, he became sick again in August 1918. On August 29, 1918, doctors found that his malaria had gotten much worse. Just a few days later, on September 2, 1918, Allmond was taken to the 14th Australian General Hospital in Port Said. Sadly, his condition became much more serious, and his health quickly went down.
Christopher William Allmond's life ended tragically on September 4, 1918 when he passed away at 6:20 a.m. from malaria in Port Said, Egypt. He was only 25 years old. Despite receiving treatment at various hospitals for several monthshe was unable to recover. He was buried the next day by Chaplain Stanley at the Port Said War Memorial Cemetery in Egypt.
