Private Sylvester Smith (Service No:N243395) enlisted in the Australian Army in September 1941 and served in New Guinea with 3rd and 36th Infantry Battalions (27 May 1942 - 6 October 1942; 14 July 1943 - 2 May 1944 and 2 August 1944 - 23 October 1944). Private Smith was hospitalised on several occasions suffering from a septic hand, malaria and dengue. He was Discharged in November 1944.
Born in 1918 in Bungendore NSW, Sylvester Edward Smith was the third of five children of Sydney Arthur Smith (b1882 in Queanbeyan, NSW) and Frances Julia Murphy (b1883 in Queanbeayn, NSW). Sydney (a Labourer) and Frances married in 1914 in Bungendore, NSW where they settled and raised their family. Sydney was a Labourer.
Sylvester worked as a Shearer and Farm Hand before enlisting, and was a Labourer in Bungendore NSW in January 1952 when he married Dorothy Helen Joan Coffey (b1929 in Griffiths, NSW). The couple settled in Lake George, Bungendore NSW where Sylvester worked as a Labourer. He died in 1988 and Dorothy in 2006.
