Lance Corporal/Driver William John Knuckey (Service No:289) enlisted in the AIF as a Private on 25 March 1916 and was attached to 1st Machine Gun Coy 3rd Reinforcements. He had served with the Militia (11th Australian Light Horse) from 1911 to 1916. Private Knuckey embarked from Sydney on 1 May 1916 on board HMAT Benalla A24 and was in France when he was promoted to Lance Corporal/Driver on 12 September 1917. Lance Corporal Knuckey embarked for the RTA on 12 June 1919 on board the Port Darwin and was Discharged on 10 July 1919. He later served with the ACMF in WWII - Corporal (Service No:N100956).
Born in 1895 in Goulburn NSW, William was the youngest of four children (and only son) of William John Knuckey Snr (b1862 in Sydney, NSW) and Janet Guthrie (b1862 in Camden, NSW). William Snr (a Railway Employee) and Janet married in 1887 in Goulburn, NSW.
William was a Carpenter in Goulburn when he enlisted in the AIF in 1916 and following his Discharge, settled in Sydney NSW. In 1930 in Tamworth NSW, William married Mabel Rose Lowe (b1889 in Bathurst, NSW) - Mabel was a Dressmaker in Bondi. William and Mabel settled in Sydney where William was a Carpenter, and in WWII served in the ACMF (1940 to 1944). William died in 1953 and Mabel in 1965.
