Bill was the second of four children of Marinus Morton Hughes (b1890 in Stirling, South Australia) and Elsie Ruby Rosalie Gregory (b1894 in Northam, WA). Marinus (a Farmer) and Elsie married 1n 1913 in Marwonga, WA and settled at Duranilan where they raised their family. Following Elsie's death in 1935, Marinus remarried.

Bill was a Farmer in Duranilan WA when he enlisted in the ACMF in January 1942. He was a Lance Corporal (Service No:W84699) attached to 12 Battalion (Jarrah) VDC. In August that year he married Gwenneth Jean Lilly (b1924 in Fremantle, WA) in Collie, WA.

Bill and Gwenneth remained on their farm 'Fernleigh' in Duranilan WA. Bill died in 1972 and Gwenneth in 1989.
