Enlisted under alias Robert Charles Carrol

Son of Thomas Hayes and Elizabeth Mary Hayes nee Cockerill of Station Master, Carrum, Victoria

On 1 August 1918 he signed a Statuatory Declaration stating that he had enlisted under the name of Robert Charles Carrol and that his true name was actually Michael Hayes. Also in a letter for a Returned Soldiers Badge he stated further his correct age on enlistment was in fact 1 July 1901 which would mean he was aged 16 when he enlisted

At the time of enlistment for WW2 he gave his next of kin as his wife Jean Hayes nee Brown of Hunter Street, Richmond, NSW. Michael and Jean married in Sydney, NSW during 1923c
