"THE LATE PRIVATE J. S. MCDOWELL.
Mrs. A. McDowell, of King-street, Alberton, has received the sad intelligence of the death of her youngest son, Private J. S. McDowell, in France. He enlisted in Sydney and left for the front on August 9, 1915. Private J. S. McDowell, who was 23 years of age, was educated at the Marist Brothers' School, Port Adelaide, in which district he was greatly esteemed by a wide circle of friends. He fought on Gallipoli and was among the last to leave at the evacuation. His father, Mr. William McDowell, was killed by a train at Port Adelaide about eight months ago. Great sympathy is felt for Mrs. McDowell in her double loss." - from the Adelaide Chronicle 26 Aug 1916 (nla.gov.au)
