Harold was the third of six children of William Cubitt Clowes (born 1860 in Norfolk, England) and Johanna Marion Josephine Horrigan (born 1866 in Warwick, QLD). William immigrated in 1883 with his parents and siblings, arriving in Melbourne, Victoria on board the Bencruachan. William was a Chemist when he and Johanna married in Brisbane, QLD in 1885. They lived in St George, Augathella and Dalby QLD,
Harold had worked as a Shop Assistant, Carter and Clerk in Beaudesert, Toowoomba and Esk, QLD before enlisting in the AIF in 1916. He served as a Private, Trooper and Sergeant (Service No:2321) with 9/1 Camel Corps and 11th Light Horse Regiment. He was Discharged in 1919 and returned to Brisbane, QLD where he worked as a Bank Clerk.
In the early 1920s Harold relocated to Townsville, QLD where he was working as a Clerk in 1927 when he married Catherine Elizabeth Cahill (born 1895 in Charters Towers, QLD). Harold and Catherine settled in Townsville, where Harold worked as a Labourer and Motor Driver. In the early 1940s they relocated to Brisbane, QLD where Harold worked as a Clerk. Catherine died in 1963 and Harold in 1979.
