The eldest of three children - sons who served in WWII - Thomas was born in 1912 in Coolgardie WA to Thomas Henry Carthew (b1876 at Running Valley, Myrtleford in Alpine, Victoria) and Elizabeth McGee (b1882 in Melbourne, Victoria). Thomas Snr was a Prospector at Balgarrie near Coolgardie WA in 1911 when he and Elizabeth married. By 1915 the family was living in Yellowdine, Yilgarn WA where Thomas was a Railway Repairer. In 1921 the family had moved to Southern Cross WA and Thomas Snr was working as a Length Runner - he rode a bicycle a designated length of the water pipeline (usually 6kms), carrying a hammer and wooden plugs to identify and repair leaks. In 1925 Thomas Snr moved his family to Bencubbin where he worked as a Ganger on the railways before moving to Perth WA in the early 1940s.
In March 1934 Thomas enlisted in the Militia (Gunner, Bombardier) and served with 6th and 7th Heavy Brigades at RAA Barracks Fremantle and Garrison Darwin in the NT.
Thomas was a Farmer at Bencubbin, WA in July 1940 when he enlisted in the Australian Army (Bombardier; Service No:NX56436) and served in the Middle East and New Guinea with 2/6 Field Regiment. Thomas was Discharged in February 1944.
In 1940 in Sydney NSW Thomas married Doreen Myrtle Gregg (b1904 in Wilmot, Tasmania) and following his Discharge, the couple settled in Sydney NSW. Thomas was an Optical Process Worker and Clerk and Doreen was a Cashier. Following Doreen's death in 1970, Thomas retired in 1977 and moved to Mandurah, WA where he died in 1986.
