Son of  Thomas Coulsen Vines and Ada Vines nee Maidwell of Theddingworth, New Rugby, England. Brother of Thomas Vines who returned to Australia on 26 December 1918 having served in the 5th Light Horse Regiment.

Commenced return to Australia on 12 May 1919 aboard HT Port Napier disembarking on 4 July 1919 at Sydney for onward travel to Brisbane
