CHARLES GRAHAM BURGESS was the son of Alfred Charles BURGESS & Ada HOSKEN and was born on the 30th of December 1891 at Mt Pleasant Station Kangaroo Island SA.
His parents were married on the 28th of July 1884 Tahlia Station SA.
His mother was the daughter of William HOSKEN & Elizabeth BROADBENT and was born 17th August 1862 Blackforest SA.
His father was born in 1858 in Sandridge VIC.
In 1894 his father; Alfred, laid the foundation of the family farm at White Lagoon, KI. They named the property “Adavale”.
It was surrounded by malee scrub about 18 miles from Kingscotte.
In 1909 the farm consisted of 2000 acres and they had planted Federation wheat, oats and barley. It carried 1000 sheep and distilled and exported Eucalyptus oil in large quantities to London.
His father sold the property in April 1911.
On the 1st of May 1911 the family left KI for their new home in Magill SA. They named their new home “Ingomar”
In 1915 Charles was a laborer, living in Lambton NSW and gave his postal address as C/- Mrs Bowie.
He enlisted into the 2nd Pioneers Battalion, 14th Reinforcements AIF on the 17th of August 1915 at Newcastle NSW and was allotted the service number 4451. On the 15th January 1916 he embarked from Sydney on the “RMS Osterley” for France where he was taken on strength in Estaples, France.
Whilst on leave he married Ethel Kathleen BAKER on the 19th of November 1917 in the Fulham Parish Church, London. Ethel was the daughter of William BAKER and lived at 16A Broughton Road, Fulham, London.
Charles returned to Australia with his wife on the 14th July 1919 on the “Dunvegan Castle” and was discharged from the AIF on the 13th of October 1919. Charles received the British War Medal for his service.
They lived at May Terrace, Lockleys SA, when they returned to Adelaide.
Ethel was admitted to the Adelaide Hospital on the 13th of March 1920 suffering from severe burns. Ethel died on the following day, 14th of March 1920.
Ethel is buried in the West Terrace Cemetery; Section: Road 2, Path Number: 8, Aspect: W, Site Number: 31 with Charles’s brothers; Henry and Clarence.
In 1921 Charles was living at Pt Vincent SA.
Charles then married Valerie Mona HICKMAN on the 22nd of January 1927 at the residence of Mary Lockyer, Carramulka SA.
Valerie was 7 months pregnant when they were married.
Valerie was the daughter of John HICKMAN & Edith Florence TYMEN and was born on the 27th of November 1909 in Stansbury SA.
Their first son; Graham, was born in Curramulka on the 28th March 1927.
Their second son; Maxwell was born nearly 12 months later, on the 23rd March 1928 in Medindie.
They lived in Walkerville and their 2 young sons attended the Walkerville Infant school
By October 1934 they were living at 6 Alma Street, Glenelg South and their 2 young sons then attended the Glenelg Infant school.
Charles was a farmer
Charles had relations with Miss Dorothy GREENSLADE, who resided at Meredith Avenue, East Glenelg.
He fathered two daughters to Dorothy; Ivona Faye BURGESS born on the 29th of March 1931 and Daphne Florence BURGESS born circa 1933.
Charles and Valerie separated.
In 1939 Charles lived at 81 Highbury Street, Prospect.
With the outbreak of WW2, Charles enlisted into the 4th Garrison Battalion on the 2nd of October 1939 in Adelaide SA and was allotted the service number S212362.
He listed his mother; Ada BARTLETT, of 106 Wright Street, Adelaide, as his next of kin.
Charles was discharged on the 29th of July 1940.
Valerie remarried.
Charles died on the 31st July 1950 in the Adelaide Hospital and is buried in the West Terrace Cemetery; Section: Kendrew Oval, Row Number: 10, Site Number: 31.
Valerie died on the 9th of August 1985 in SA and is buried in the Cheltenham Cemetery; Section U, Drive D, Path 30, Site number 246N.
