From How We Served
The final resting place for;- 8209 & V14248 Private Harold Thomas Deakin of South Melbourne & Molawa, Victoria, who prior to his enlistment for War Service on the 10th of April 1916 had been employed as an ironworker.
Harold was allocated to reinforcements for the 1st Tunneling Company 1st AIF and was embarked for England and further training, via Egypt on the 26th of November 1917.
Following his arrival on the 2nd of February 1918, Harold entered into training at Parkhouse Camp. Having passed through his training phase, Harold was shipped over to France where he was disembarked on the 2nd of April, and was formally taken on strength as a Sapper with his Unit in the field on the 16th of April.
Harold’s service in the trenches was to be continuous following his arrival until he sustained chest wounds due to an enemy air raid on the 29th of October, during the last full month of the War.
Evacuated for hospitalization, Harold was returned to England on the 23rd of November. Following his recovery, Harold was sent to the 2nd Convalescent Depot at Weymouth.
Due to the War now being over, Harold began his repatriation back to Australia, departing England on the 10th of April 1919, and following his return, he received his official discharge from the 1st AIF for his re entry into civilian life on the 23rd of November 1919.
With the outbreak of the Second World War, Harold again presented himself for service with the Australian Military Forces on the 8th of May 1941, and was accepted for full-time duty within Australia.
Harold was serving with the 17th Garrison Battalion when he was evacuated due to sickness, and whilst being hospitalized he succumbed to illness on the 18th of July 1944. He was aged 45.
Private Harold Deakin, a wounded veteran of the ‘Great War’, and who had chosen to serve Australia during a Second World War, was formally laid to rest within Springvale War Cemetery, Victoria.
