Private Walter Edward Charles Monk (Service No:WX10469) enlisted in the Army on 20 December 1940 with No 2 Training Battalion and transferred to 2 Independent Coy on 11 May 1941. Private Monk served in Timor (8 December 1941 to 16 December 1942) and New Guinea (16 June 1943 to 8 September 1944). Promoted to Corporal, he reverted to Trooper/Private at his own request and on 10 February 1945 was Graded Group 2 Intelligence Duties. Private Monk was attached to 2/2 Commando Squadron at Discharge on 13 April 1945.
Ted was born in 1920 in London England, eldest child of Edward Monk (b1889 in Essex, England) and Helen Spalding (b1889 in London, England). Edward (a Soldier in the AIF) and Helen married in 1919 in Suffolk - Edward and Helen, with Ted, arrived in Fremantle WA in 1920 on board the Kigoma, and following Edward's Discharge in October, settled in Latham via Kalgoorlie where they established Clavering Farm and raised their family - Edward was a Farmer. Edward was a Farm Hand when he immigrated in 1913, arriving in Fremantle, WA on board the Armadale and working as a Farm Labourer and Teamster in Brookton WA before enlisting in the AIF (Private; Service No:3526).
Ted was working as a Truck and Tractor Driver in Fremantle WA when he enlisted, and in 1941 in Perth WA, married Mary (Peggy) Margaret Haynes (b1922 in Broome, WA). Following his Discharge, Ted and Peggy settled at Latham via Kalgoorlie where they raised their family and Ted was a Farmer. The couple retired to Perth where Peggy died in 2009 and Ted in 2010.
