97 years ago today, on the Monday afternoon of the 11th October 1926, Gunner Peter Kerr Aitchison, 14th Australian Field Artillery Brigade (Reg No-348), miner from 12 Young Street, Broadmeadow, New South Wales, was laid to rest at Sandgate Cemetery, age 38. PRESBYTERIAN-17SE. 15.
Born at Broadmeadow, New South Wales on the 2nd November 1887 as AITCHESON to William and Elizabeth Aitchison nee Thompson (AITCHESON), Peter enlisted on the 26th July 1915 with the 30th Battalion at Newcastle, N.S.W.
"Roll of Honour, 1917 for Private Frederick Hillgrove Jackson (labourer from 127 Waratah Road, Broadmeadow, New South Wales, enlisted 26.7.1915, Newcastle, N.S.W., 30th Battalion, Reg. No-451, Killed in Action 20th July 1916, Battle of Fromelles, age 25, resting at VC Corner Australian Cemetery and Memorial, Fromelles, France. Memorial No 2, awaiting memorialisation at the cemetery - METHODIST 1 (WESLEYAN) N SW. 7)" inserted by his loving friend, Gunner P. K. Aitchison (on active service abroad).
Unit embarked from Sydney, New South Wales on board HMAT A72 Beltana on the 9th November 1915.
Admitted to hospital 10.12.1917 (not stated).
Granted leave to England from the 30.5.1918 to the 11.6.1918.
Peter returned home on the 1st July 1919, being discharged on the 23rd August 1919.
Mr. Aitchison’s name has been inscribed on the Hamilton (Gregson Park) War Memorial, Hamilton Municipal District Roll of Honor, Hamilton Superior Public School Roll of Honor - as Aitcheson, Hamilton-Rose of Hamilton Lodge, G.U.O.O.F. Roll of Honour and The Capt. Clarence Smith Jeffries (V.C.) and Pte. William Matthew Currey (V.C.) Memorial Wall.
I have placed poppies at Peter’s gravesite in remembrance of his service and sacrifice for God, King & Country.
