The photograph of the brass plate/plaque is by a James Pasby-reference M50.05 and is a shot of part of the Rood Screen/Chancel Screen in the Church of St John the Evangelist at Lobley Hill/ St. John’s Road in Langley Moor, County Durham where Captain Appleby was born.
The screen serves as a WWI War Memorial and was unveiled on 6th May 1920 by Professor F. Hobday, FRCVS, CMG.,[Hon. Major] of London, and was dedicated by Archdeacon Derry, Rector of Sedgefield.
As well as the inscribed names of the fallen, the screen bears the legend:
“ To the Glory of God and in sacred memory of those who gave their lives for humanity in the Great War 1914-1918.”
