Mrs Hill of Hobart has received the following letter concerning the death of her son –
Dear Mrs Hill, I can hardly find words to express my sorrow and sense of loss in the death of your son, No 228, Bombardier C. W. Hill of my battery, which occurred on the 27th of April, 1917 Your dear laddie was on duty, special work for which I had selected him, when a German heavy shell burst near him, he died that evening at 42 Casualty Clearing Station, at 9 30 o'clock I have collected his personal effects, and will forward them to you. Your son was one of the best boys in my battery, and after over a year on active service was one of my most trusted N.C.O.'s Our appreciation of your boy I hope will comfort you a little, but I realise somewhat the utter desolation in the heart of a mother who has given so much in this hour of the nation's need. My heart aches for you Believe me yours sincerely, Moreton Williams, Major, R.A.A."
