Born on 26/7/1886 at St Peters, he was the son of Otto and Louisa (nee Schwarze) Black. He attended Pulteney Grammar School and served in the No. 6 Light Horse Field Ambulance for 4.5 years before it was disbanded. He married Constance Chennell of Medindie on 4 September 1915 at Brougham Place Congregational church. After their marriage they moved to Murray Bridge where he was a farmer. His wife moved back with her family when Charles enlisted.
Black arrived in Fovant Wiltshire England at the Australian Army Medical Corps Training Depot on 12 August 1918. He proceeded to France arriving at the Australian General Base Depot, Rouelles on 8 October 1918. Two days later he was admitted to hospital with broncho pneumonia and died 9 days later.
