He was a Corporal on 22 July 1945 when he enlisted in the AIF in Melbourne and was attached to 6 Infantry Training Battalion. In 1941 Corporal Stevenson completed training at No 2 OTB and was recommended for future Officer and Platoon Commander. Promoted to Lieutenant in January 1942, he embarked with 2/2 Pioneer Battalion from Townsville for Port Moresby on 19 July 1943 on board the Canberra, returning on 10 February 1944 on board the Kanimbla. In 1945, Lieutenant Stevenson completed the Hygiene Instructor's Course before serving in Morotai and Balikapan (28 April 1945 - 30 November 1945), and was attached to 2/2 Pioneer Battalion at Discharge on 10 December 1945.
Bruce was born at Linga via Ouyen, Victoria in 1916, youngest of three children of Gilbert Abercrombie Stevenson (b1887 in Bagdad via Hobart, Tasmania) and Jessie Mary Preston (b1876 at Mt Dunheed, Victoria). Gilbert (a Contractor) and Jessie married in Geelong in 1909 and settled in the Wimmera Region - Beulah, Underbool, Namengarook - where they raised their family and Gilbert was a Farmer. In the mid 1920s Gilbert was working as a Commission Agent near Ouyen before the family moved to Melbourne in the 1930s, where Gilbert was a Commercial Traveller. Gilbert enlisted in the ACMF in 1941 (Lance Sergeant; Service No:V17462), and died in 1942.
Bruce worked as a Salesman in Warrnambool before moving to Melbourne in 1940, where he enlisted in the AIF. In 1944 in Melbourne, Bruce married Beryl Jean McEwan, and following his Discharge, they settled in Melbourne where they raised their family and Bruce worked as a Salesman and Business Manager. Bruce died in 1985.
