Campbell Colin Clyde 229 - 42nd Battalion, D Company
A Campbell on the Wooroolin WW1 Honour Board was in fact Colin Clyde Campbell, born 1874, an elder brother of Geo A Campbell the Wooroolin Queensland National Bank Manager from 1910 to 1918. Whilst George lived at Wooroolin he married Doris Ellwood, the Aunt of Alan & June Elwood, at Kingaroy. At his farewell party in 1918 there was a presentation, made by Mr. J. E. Jones, of a Loewe and Co. pipe and gold-mounted tobacco poach from Mrs A. Jessen in recognition of Mr. Campbell's valuable assistance to her in a business capacity. JE Jones was my Dad’s Uncle and Mrs Jessen was my Dads Grandmother….
Colin Campbell served in the Boer War and has 2 separate records in the Australian Army during WW1. He first enlisted on 16 Mar 1915 9th Infantry Battalion at Brisbane giving his mother Mary Campbell as next of kin. Captain Colin Campbell’s unit embarked from Brisbane, Queensland, on board HMAT A15 Star of England on 8 April 1915. He was ill with Enteric Fever and hospitalised at New Zealand stationary hospital, Port Said per an article in The Queenslander Saturday 25 September 1915 - Page 13. He returned to Australia on 4 Nov 1915 as the medical board stated he would take 3 months to recover.
Captain Colin Campbell reenlisted in the Australian Army on 14 Feb 1916 in the 42nd Battalion, D Company this time giving his brother George Campbell, Wooroolin, as NOK. His unit embarked from Sydney, New South Wales, on board HMAT A30 Borda on 5 June 1916.
How interesting the Ken Patterson, also on the Wooroolin WW1 Honour Board, was in the same unit but it looks like Colin Campbell led a very different life in the army. On 28 Aug 1916 Colin Campbell was promoted to Major. In late 1916 he was sent to England and in Feb 1917 he acted as escort to HM The King on the occasion of opening of Parliament. He was awarded an MBE in Jan 1918.
During his time in England he married Doris King in Dec 1917 and returned to Australia with his wife and child on 10 May 1919.
Major Colin Campbell MBE died in 1942 and is buried at Mount Thompson Memorial Gardens & Crematorium, Queensland
He is also remembered at the Queensland Garden of Remembrance (within the grounds) Pinnaroo Lawn Cemetery - Graham Rd - Bridgeman Downs, Qld Memorial Location: Wall 10, Row Q.
