His brother 5648 Pte William Henry Ashcroft, 5th Battalion AIF was killed in action , 20 December 1916. Another brother, 3451 Pte Walter Benjamin Ashcroft 2nd Pioneer Battalion, was said to have gone out looking for Edward, (they were in the same unit), was severely wounded in the process, (double amputation of legs) and was returned to Australia, 16 March 1918.
