John Henry McCarthy was the eldest and only son of John McCarthy and his wife Maria (formerly Barker).  His father John McCarthy was born in Tipperary Ireland and worked as a carrier.  He was 33 when John Henry was born.  His mother Maria was born in Wangaratta Victoria.  She was 22 when John Henry was born.  John Henry was born in Dubbo, New South Wales in April 1887.  He was the eldest and only son of John and Maria.  He had five younger sisters, Annie, Mary Catherine, Agnes Lucretia, Constance Gertrude and Lilian May.

Prior to enlisting in World War 1 John worked as a labourer and resided at Box Street, Clermont Queensland.  John was 29 years and 4 months when he enlisted.

After he returned from the war he returned to his then home town of Clermont Queensland, where he lived with his mother Maria and her second husband Matt Hammerstrom.

John never married and lived out his remaining years in Clermont Queensland until 1943 when he took his own life aged 56.
