95 years ago today, on the Sunday afternoon of the 17th June 1928, Private John William Armstrong, 14th Battalion (Reg No-3168), engineer from Lithgow, New South Wales, was laid to rest at Sandgate Cemetery, age 41. METHODIST 2 (PRIMITIVE) 23 SW. 43. Not married.

John had died on the 14th June 1928 at the Randwick Military Hospital, N.S.W.

Born at Lambton, New South Wales on the ? ? 1886 to Thomas H and Christina Armstrong, John enlisted on the 21st July 1915 at Seymour, Victoria.

Unit embarked from Melbourne, Victoria on board HMAT A17 Port Lincoln on the 16th October 1915.
Wounded in action - 9.8.1916 (GSW and shell shock).
Admitted to hospital 22.2.1916 (not stated), 15.2.1917 (haemoptysis - coughing up of blood or blood-stained mucus from the bronchi, larynx, trachea, or lungs).

John was invalided home on the 2nd July 1917, being discharged permanently unfit (haemoptysis) on the 16th August 1917.

Nothing located on Trove regarding enlistment, wounding's, returning home, etc.

Mr. Armstrong’s name has been inscribed on The Capt. Clarence Smith Jeffries (V.C.) and Pte. William Matthew Currey (V.C.) Memorial Wall. Name not located inscribed on any other known War Memorial or Roll of Honour.

I have placed poppies on John’s brown granite headstone in remembrance of his service and sacrifice for God, King & Country.
