Died on this date – 3rd March.... Henry William Lawson was born at Aldershot, Hampshire, England in 1885.
According to information supplied by his widow for the Roll of Honour - Henry William Lawson came to Australia when he was 27 years of age.
Henry William Lawson enlisted in the Australian Imperial Force (A.I.F.) on 22nd September, 1915 as a 30 year old, married, Chef from Granville, South Australia. He was appointed acting Quartermaster Sergeant with 18th Battery, F.A.B. (Field Artillery Brigade) on 16th October, 1915.
Quartermaster Sergeant Henry William Lawson embarked from Melbourne, Victoria on HMAT Persic (A34) on 22nd November, 1915 with the 6th Field Artillery Brigade – 18th Battery & disembarked at Suez on 21st December, 1915 & proceeded to join M.E.F. (Mediterranean Expeditionary Force).
Quartermaster Sergeant Lawson embarked from Alexandria on 17th March, 1916 & arrived in France on 23rd March, 1916 & was promoted to Temporary B.S.M. (Battery Sergeant Major) & Warrant Officer (Class 2) on 15th March, 1916. He was promoted to Battery Sergeant Major Warrant Officer (Class 2) on 14th April, 1916 & to Warrant Officer (Class 1) on 17th August, 1916.
Warrant Officer (Class 1) Henry William Lawson was sent sick to Hospital on 31st December, 1916. He was admitted to Hospital at Etretat then transferred to England on Hospital Ship Glenart Castle where he was admitted to 5th London General Hospital, Westminster, England on 14th January, 1917. He was discharged form Hospital on 9th February, 1917 & was granted furlough from 10th February to 26th February, 1917 & was then to report to Perham Downs.
Warrant Officer (Class 1) Henry William Lawson was marched in to No. 1 Command Depot at Perham Downs, Wiltshire & medically classified on 28th February 1917 as B1 A. (temporarily unfit for service). He was reclassified on 17th May, 1917 as “A” – fit for active service.
Warrant Officer (Class 1) Lawson was transferred to R.B.A.A. (Reserve Brigade Australian Artillery) at Larkhill, Wiltshire & proceeded overseas to France on 2nd July, 1917. He rejoined 6th Army Brigade, Australian Field Artillery from Hospital on 17th August, 1917 in France.
Warrant Officer (Class 1) Lawson was sent to Hospital sick in France on 31st December, 1917. He was transferred to England on Hospital Ship Cambrai on 19th January, 1918 & admitted to Military Hospital, Boscombe, England on 19th January, 1918 with otorrhoea (ear drainage). He was transferred to 4th London General Hospital on 24th January, 1918.
Warrant Officer (Class 1) Henry William Lawson died at 6.30 pm on 3rd March, 1918 at 4th London General Hospital, R.A.M.C., Denmark Hill, London, England from Meningitis & Otitis Media. He was buried in All Saints Churchyard, Warlingham, Surrey, England.
