Leading Aircraftman Walter David Paine (Service No:149489) enlisted in the RAAF on 31 May 1944 as an Aircraftman I, and on 11 January 1945 was appointed Leading Aircraftman. Mustered as a Plant Operatore, LAC Paine served in the Solomon Islands and was attached to 7 Airfield Construction Squadron when he Discharged on 12 April 1946. His two siblings - Vere and George also served in WWII.
Born in 1921 in Newport, Melbourne Victoria, Watty was the youngest of three children of George Alexander Paine (b1895 in Melbourne, Victoria) and Hilda Mavis Boyd (b1894 in Melbourne, Victoria). George (a Cartage Contractor) and Hilda married in 1915 in Melbourne where they settled and raised their family. George worked as a Cartage Contractor.
Watty completed a five year Motor Mechanic apprenticeship with Lanes Motors Pty in Melbourne, and worked as a Driver and Mechanic for his father's cartage business. In 1946 in Altona in Melbourne Watty married Shirley May Glew (b1924 in Melbourne, Victoria). Watty and Shirley settled in Newport in Melbourne where Watty worked as a Plant Operator, Truck Driver, Mechanic and Cartage Contractor. Watty died in 2013 and Shirley in 2014.
