Born: 

Father John Joseph Barry (a mail contractor) and Mother Bridget E Barry, living at Tarcowie, South Australia (native of Appila, SA).

Sister:  Annie T C Barry

On enlisting James was 27 yrs 4 mths old; single; 6' 0.5" tall; 154 lbs; fresh complexion; blue eyes; brown hair; single; Roman Catholic.

10/1/1916      enlisted in Adelaide, SA
                     as a Private in 9th Light Horse Regiment, 16th Reinforcement

28/4/1916      embarked from Port Adelaide, SA, onboard HMAT A41 Bakara

1/6/1916        taken on strength, into 3rd Light Horse Training Regiment, Tel-el-Kebir, Egypt

1/8/1916        transferred to 3rd Light Horse Brigade

1/8/1916        taken on strength, Romani

15/11/1916     transferred to 3rd Ligh Horse Brigade Machine Gun Squadron

19/4/1917       wounded in action - gun shot wound to head
                      admitted to 1st Light Horse Field Ambulance, Shellal

20/4/1917        transferred to 53rd Welsh Casualty Clearing Station, Deir-el-Belah, Palestine

25/4/1917        reported dangerously ill

27/4/1917       died of wounds received in action in Gaza, Palestine, Syria

buried in:         Deir El Belah War Cemetery - Grave 180

His grave later changed to:  Row D, Grave No. 69, Palestine

He is commemorated on the Australian War Memorial, panel 180.
