Andrew Richard "Curly" Muir

Andrew Richard "Curly" Muir was born in Harrington 1886, his father, Henry, was 31 and his mother, Margaret, was 25. He worked as a labourer. He enlisted at Coffs Harbour to serve in the Australian Imperial Force in January 1916. Andrew was part of 36th Battalion (D Company) at Broadmeadow in Newcastle and left Sydney on 13 May 1916 for Devonport, in the United Kingdom and then Salisbury Plains for four months' training. The battalion crossed to France in late November 1916 and moved into the trenches of the Western Front for the first time on 4 December, just in time for the onset of the terrible winter of 1916-17. He fought with the 36th and 45th Batallions and saw action at Ypres, Villers-Brettonneux, the Somme and Passchendale. He died of broncho-pneumonia on 11 December 1918 in France, at the age of 32 and is buried in Abbeville Cemetary. His name is included on the Roll of Honor at the Australian War Memorial in Canberra.
