My Grandfather, my hero
He was my grandfather and was awarded the DCM and MM at the Somme. He survived the war and I grew up staying at their place and loving this big gentle man who always had time for me and in later years for my tiny, sick daughter. He never mentioned that he was a decorated hero and I only found out after his death when I was given his medals by my mother and my husband, a soldier, recognised their significance. Since then we have researched his war record and visited the Somme twice to find the area where he fought. He was a wonderful man, I'm not surprised he was a hero, he always was to me.
