Patrick Aloysius Byrne was born in Broken Hill, New South Wales, Australia in 1890. His job before leaving for war was a labourer. His mother’s name was Bridget Byrne and she was his next of kin and she was a Roman Catholic just like Patrick. She lived at 7 Dew Street, Mile End, SA. He enlisted on the 22nd of February in 1915 and his rank on enlistment was a private. His service number was 756. He had a slim build when he enlisted in the war. He was 5 foot 7 and a ½ which is around 1.73 metres tall. He weighed 161 lbs which is around 73 kg and his chest measured 36/37 inches. His appearance was stated in his service record consisting of dark brown hair, greenish brown eyes and a dark complexion.
Patrick Byrne’s rank was a base depot jury however before he embarked he was promoted to his unit, 27th Brigade D company which was raised on the 31st of March 1915 and he embarked on his expedition from Adelaide on board the HMAT A2 Geelong in 31st May 1915. He was 22 years old and headed for Egypt where he spent two months training for the war. On the 4th of September his Unit left Egypt and landed in Gallipoli.
The 27th Brigade was a part of the 7th Brigade and reinforced the ANZAC division. Patrick departed Gallipoli in December but was then sent to hospital on the 25th of October 1915 and was in the hospital for rheumatism. He was under treatment for a while before returning to his Brigade in late December where he joined them in Gallipoli until January when they moved to Egypt.
The 7th Brigade stayed in Egypt for a short period of time in January however Patrick Byrne fell sick again and was taken to hospital for valvular heat disease on the 6th of April 1916.
He was transferred to a hospital in England. A letter was sent to his mother on the 23rd of May 1916, letting her know that he was in hospital in London because of his Heart disease.
24th June 1916, Patrick was moved from the hospital of London, and shipped back to Australia. Another letter was sent to his mother stating that he would be coming home to Australia. No details concerning movement or name of transport that he would be coming to Australia on could be disclosed in the letter however his service record states that he arrived in South Australia on a boat called the Euripides. On the 17th of October he was discharged from the army as medically unfit.
Upon arriving home, he received the 1914/15 star, the British war medal and the victory medal. When he arrived back in Adelaide, he got married and had three children named Kevin (who died at nine months old), John and Mary. After starting a family, Patrick died in 1922 in the Keswick military hospital due to his ill health caused by his war service.
