2739 William Alexander MOWATT (born MOWAT) was the twin-brother to 2722 Charles James MOWATT (born MOWAT) who both enlisted on 19 Jul 1915 at Maryborough, Victoria, and embarked together aboard "Ulysses" on 27 Oct 1915.
On 24 Apr 1918 William Alexander MOWATT was wounded in the back and arm (left buttock), and suffering considerable pain he continued his task of retrieving his horses to harness up to his wagon, under very heavy H. E. and Gas shell bombardment, he finally collapsed from his wounds and had to be evacuated - Awarded the Military Medal
"...2739 Driver William Alexander Mowatt, 6th Reinforcements, 22nd Battalion, of Maryborough, Vic. Dvr Mowatt enlisted on 19 July 1915 and embarked from Melbourne aboard HMAT Ulysses on 27 October 1915. He was awarded the Military Medal (MM) on 29 August 1918 whilst serving with the 13th Field Artillery Brigade. He returned to Australia on 23 June 1919." - SOURCE (www.awm.gov.au)
