'On the night 29-30 August, 1918, during operations near Peronne he showed conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty under extremely heavy shell fire whilst supervising the construction of a footbridge across the Canal du Somme at Halle. Again, on 30 August, he set a fine example to those under him whilst supervising the construction of two bridges for horse transport across the Somme at Clery.'
