Hewitt Bell enlisted the same day as his brother 4435 David Mckenzie Bell. Both served in the 57th Battalion which was in the process of taking over part of the line at Flers on the 28 October 1916. Both brothers were killed in action on this date with no details of how they died being recorded in their files. They were recorded as both being buried at map location Albert Combined 1/40000 N.24 a.7. 1/2 1.1/2 but both graves were lost during the war and they are remembered on the Australian National Memorial at Villers Bretonneux.
