54 years ago today, on the 25th October 1967, Lieutenant Richard Thomas Richards (M.M.), 5th Australian Light Horse Signal Troop (Reg No-17151), telegraphist (Waratah Telephone Service) from Christo Road, Waratah, New South Wales, was laid to rest at Sandgate Cemetery, age 75. CATHOLIC 3-92. 95.
Born at Waratah, New South Wales on the 2nd January 1892 to Arthur Samuel and Mary Ann Richards; husband of Leah Mary Richards nee Moran (married? died 1994), Richard enlisted November 1916 with the 1st Signal Squadron Engineers-Special Reinforcements at Sydney, N.S.W.
Sustaining no wounding’s or illness during his service, Richard returned home September 1919, being discharged on the 7th December 1919.
I have not located Mr. Richard’s name inscribed on any known War Memorial or Roll of Honour.
Awarded Military Medal 20.7.1918.
I have placed poppies and a 1914-1918 WAR label at the gravesite in remembrance of Richard’s service and sacrifice for God, King & Country during The Great War.
