Bill spent 6 years in the army, serving first in the Borneo/Malaya conflict, before going to Vietnam. He was involved in the TET offensive.
Away from the army, he started in the meatworks at 13, working with his father. He did an appreticeship at the Telegraph Newspaper Office in Fortitude Valley in Brisbane, to learn how to be a printer, something he did until his mid 50s when he retired.
