Photograph is of Private Frederick James Lewis and his mother, Keturah Lewis, of Toowoomba.

Private Lewis was one of 11 children, six of whom enlisted and served in the Light Horse and all returned to Australia.

In Australia, we have been fortunate to have experienced many decades of relative peace in the world, compared to WW1 and WW2.

Having raised children and see them grow into adulthood without facing the prospect of world war like what our ancestors did, makes me feel very grateful. I could not imagine the grief and worry many of our past relatives would have gone through in WW1 and WW2.

Keturah Lewis would have most likely seen all the columns of names in newspapers of the dead from WW1 being constantly published. It must have been a very stressful time for her worrying about her six sons.
