Sydney Sparkman was Born in Windsor, Prahran, Vic, on 5th February, 1898. He was the 3rd born child in a family of 6 children born to Albert George Sparkman and Catherine Jane Lemin. His father died in 1909 when Sydney was 11 years old. By 1914 the family was living at 7 Montrose Ave, Elsternwick.
Sydney enlisted for service on 10th July, 1915. He was 18 years and 5 months old and worked as a Boot Repairer. His mother, Catherine (Kate) Sparkman, signed her consent to his enlistment. He was appointed to 2nd Division Signal Company with Service No. 3676. Sydney followed his older brother, Reginald Sparkman, into the 2nd Division Signal Company. Reginald had enlisted on 11th March, 1915.
After a period of initial training Sydney attended the AIF Signal School. He embarked for overseas as a Sapper on 23 November, 1915. He disembarked in Egypt and was transferred to 4th Division Signal Company on 9 February, 1916. He embarked from Alexandria and disembarked in Marseilles, France, on 8 June, 1916. He remained with 4th Division Signal Company, and was re-mustered as a Driver on 28 December, 1916. He was re-mustered as a Sapper on 1 November, 1917. He embarked for RTA on 12 May, 1919, and was discharged on 16 September, 1919, classified as Medically Unfit.
In 1922 Sydney Sparkman Married Lydia Louise Davis. They made their home in Caulfield, Vic.
On 26 March, 1942, Sydney Sparkman enlisted in the Volunteer Defence Corps for part-time duty. He was 44 years old and worked as a Shoe Repairer in Armadale, Vic. He was accepted for service in the 4th Battalion VDC, as was his brother Reginald the following month. He was discharged from the VDC on 8 October, 1945.
Sydney Sparkman Died on 30th August, 1948. His death was attributed to War Service. He was Buried in the Brighton Cemetery, Vic.
