3 Dec 1917: Honoured Military Cross, AUSTRALIAN IMPERIAL FORCES. 2nd Lt. James Sutherland Beavis, Inf . For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. During a raid on the enemy he was leader of the flank storming party, and led his men with splendid dash and excellent judgment. He was the first to enter the enemy trench, and did not leave until the last of his party had withdrawn. On several occasions he rendered invaluable service in reconnoitring the ground in front of the enemy line, and supplied information which materially assisted in the success of the whole operation.

James Sutherland BEAVIS was born in Dunolly, Victoria in 1886

His parents were James BEAVIS & Elizabeth Mary CULLUM

He enlisted in Ararat, Victoria on 27th March, 1916 and embarked from Melbourne on 27th May, 1916 on the HMAT Ascanius with the 39th Infantry Battalion, A Company -

James was wounded 3 times and died of wounds in France on 13th July, 1918 - he is buried in the St Pierre Cemetery and his name is memorialised on the Australian War Memorial

He was awarded the Military Cross on 3rd December, 1917 ( see service details for further information)
