Alexander was born in Scotland, in the city of Perth, in about 1882. His parents were James and Mary Bruce, and he attended the Guildtown School.

Alexander was a contractor when he enlisted for service in the AIF on 30 June 1915. With the rank of Private, he was attached to the 7th Infantry Battalion, 10th reinforcements.

During his service abroad, he rose to the rank of Sergeant, but was shortly after killed in action in France, on the 15 November 1916 aged 34.

Alexander was laid to rest in the Longueval Road Cemetery (Row G, Grave No. 13), France.

He was 34 and his parents lived at Scone, Perthshire, Scotland.

He is remembered on the Scone War Memorial.

His brother also fell and rests nearby  in Longueval-DELVILLE WOOD CEMETERY, Grave XXIII. R. 2.
