William was the youngest of five children of Andrew Haldane (b1858 in Fifeshire, Scotland) and first wife Isabella Dick (b1856 in Fifeshire, Scotland). Andrew (a Quarryman) and Isabella (a Mill Worker) married in 1878 in Clackmannanshire, Scotland. The couple immigrated with their two children in 1887, arriving in Brisbane QLD in December on board the Duke of Buccleuch. The family lived in Charters Towers, QLD where Andrew was a Miner before moving to Meekatharra, WA in the early 1900s. Andrew served in WWI (Private; Service No:4617). In 1917 he remarried and settled in Perth WA.

William worked as a Shell Opener in Broome WA and served in WWI (Private; Service No:1550) with 11th Infantry Battalion. He was WiA at Gallipoli (GSW to throat - severe). Following his Discharge in 1916 he returned to Broome where he worked as a Shell Opener. In 1921 William married Charlotte Esther Hilliard (b1899 in Broome WA) - following Charlotte's death in 1936 their five children were fostered by Myra Dyson. 

In May 1942 William was a Prospector in Marble Bar, WA when he enlisted in the ACMF. He was a Private (Service No:W74549) attached to 11th North West Battalion VDC when he was Discharged in December 1944. Sons James Francis (Service No:F/V23) and Bobby (Service No:WX8433) also served in WWII.

Following his Discharge, William settled in Derby WA where he workked as a Labourer. William died in 1961.
