Biography contributed by Adelaide Botanic High School

Norman Wilfred Bennett was born in January 1891, in the town of Yorke, South Australia. He listed his mother Margaret next of kin on his enlistment documents, and his address - Avenue Road, Yorke, South Australia. York was a county on the upper Eyre Peninsula that incorporates Whyalla. Bennett was single at the time of enlistment and his previous occupation was a moulder. Bennett enlisted in the A.I.F at the Keswick Barrack’s on the 2nd of August 1915, aged 24 years. He had a fair complexion with blue eyes and brown hair, as stated in his enlistment description.

After enlistment and early into his journey for the army Bennett (Regimental Number: 3692) was transferred to and from 3 different Battalion’s. Taken on strength to the 12th Battalion and not long after he was transferred to the 52nd Battalion. The 4th Pioneer Battalion ended up being his destination and where he spent the next 2 ½ years and was the battalion that he was discharged from.

Bennet was bsent without leave some on 28th October 1916 for 45 minutes from 2100 to 2145 and was penalised a day's pay.

Bennet was wounded in action 11/7/1917 (shot it in the lumbar region), and he was admitted to hospitals in France and England as it was a serious injury. He took furlough in Auust 1917 and reported back to the No 2 Command Depot in Weymouth on 5th September 1917. A couple of weeks later he was sent to hospital with an infection. In December 1917 he was absent without leave again for around 2 weeks and this time he was fined 22 days of Field Punishment No 2 and forfeited 35 days pay.

Bennett returned to Australia on the16th May 1919 and was discharged 8th July 1919.
