'A very likeable fellow. Keen cricketer' (National Archives Australia) described Philip in 1941 when he enlisted in the RAAF. Philip had served in WWI(Sapper; Service No:6015) and was born in Lancashire, England in 1897. He was the eighth of twelve children of Richard Beale Carter (b1863 in Devonshire, England) and Lucy Agnes Kilgraston Grant (b1866 in New Zealand). Richard (a Draper) and Lucy married in 1886 in New Zealand, and by 1890 had moved to Blackburn in Lancashire, England with their family. Richard was a Draper and in the early 1900s he and Lucy emigrated with their family to Fremantle WA. The family made regular trips back to Lancashire, and Richard was a Draper and Merchant in Fremantle WA, with many of his sons working in the family business.
Philip attended Scotch College in Perth WA and had worked as a Draper, Mercer and Tailor in Fremantle and Geraldton. In 1929 he married Clare Hollings (b1900 in Lancashire, England) - Clare, working as a Shop Assistant in Geraldton WA, had emigrated in 1912, arriving with her parents and siblings in Fremantle WA on board the Belgic. Philip and Clare lived in Collie and Fremantle WA where Philip worked as a Draper and Insurance Agent, and was known as a very keen cricketer. They were living in Perth WA, where Philip was Secretary of the Anzac Club and Manager of Anzac House when he enlisted in the RAAF in August 1941 (Pilot Officer; Service No:293032). Philip was a Flight Lieutenant attached to 21 Primary Training Centre (PTC) when he was Discharged in November 1945.
Philip and Clare remained in Perth WA, where Philip was Manager of Anzac House, before moving to Nannup on the Blackwood River in the early 1950s. They managed the Nannup Hotel until retiring in the early 1960s and settling in Busselton WA. Clare died in 1963 and Philip in 1970.
