Buckley was a coach body builder on enlistment in the Australian Imperial Forces having served two years with the senior cadets and three years with 19th Battery, Field Artillery in the part time Citizen Military Forces. He enlisted on July 7, 1915 and was taken on strength on August 20 and served with the field artillery reinforcements until allotted to the 12th Battery of the 4th Australian Field Artillery Brigade on September, 20. Two weeks later he died at the Austin Hospital of cerebro spinal meningitis. His brother, Maurice Vincent Buckley VC DCM served on the Western Front under the alias Gerald Sexton having used his brother's first name and his mother's maiden name. Both brothers are buried in the same family grave.
