Bill was the sixth of seven children of William Barr Campbell (b1885 in Sydney, NSW) and Ada Louisa Hill (b1886 in Melbourne, Victoria). William (a Baker) and Ada married in 1906 in Melbourne, Victoria where they settled and raised their family. William was a Baker.
In 1940 Bill married Hazel Jean Runge (b1914 in Benalla, Victoria) in Melbourne where Hazel was working as a Binder. Bill enlisted in the RAN in September that year as an Ordinary Seaman (Service No:PM3011) attached to HMAS Lonsdale. he was attached to HMAS Kanimbla in August 1941 when he was promoted to Able Seaman. Bill was attached to HMAS Rockhampton when he was Discharged in February 1946.
Hazel had remained in Melbourne and worked as a Packer. On Bill's return from Service, he and Hazel settled in Bentleigh, Melbourne where Bill worked as a Tennis Court Builder and Hazel as a Packer. Hazel died in 1987 and Bill in 1990.
